Over 1,100 Lambton-Kent elementary students suspended for vaccination issues

“We want our students in school,” says John Howitt.

The director of education of the Lambton Kent District School Board is encouraging parents to contact the health unit, if they have received a notice about their children getting a suspension because of their immunization records are out of date.

Elementary school students faced suspension from school Tuesday if their vaccination record or a valid exemption is not reported.

According to Lambton Public Health on Feb. 29, 1,117 elementary school aged students are to face suspensions, while 640 high school students are at risk of facing suspension on March 26.

The school board doesn’t have a say in whether a suspension is given, said Howitt

These suspensions are required under the Immunization of School Pupils Act 1990. The last time this was enforced was 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
