Overnight fire forces evacuation of 25-storey apartment block

Residents of a large apartment block in downtown Winnipeg had to flee the building early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in an unoccupied suite, fire officials say.

The fire started on the second floor of Holiday Towers North, at the corner of Hargrave Street and York Avenue, around 2 a.m. Tuesday, fire officials said.

Residents of the 25-storey building had to wait an hour in Winnipeg Transit buses while crews put out the flames and ensured it was safe to re-enter.

No one was hurt, officials said.
