Overnight house fire, sushi restaurant fire kept firefighters busy

Ottawa firefighters were kept busy overnight with a house fire in Vanier that has displaced a couple and their dog, as well as a fire at a sushi restaurant on Carling Avenue that caused about $150,000 in damage.

The house fire broke out at 102 Jolliet Ave., near Beechwood and Marier avenues, at about 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Everyone inside the one-storey home managed to escape safely.

Paramedics treated the woman for smoke inhalation and took her to Montfort Hospital.

The dog was treated on site by firefighters for smoke inhalation and Ottawa bylaw officers later took the dog to the vet.

Damage is estimated at about $200,000 and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

​Sushi restaurant fire

A couple of hours later, firefighters responded to a fire inside 1000 Sushi Islands at 1969 Carling Ave., between Churchill and Broadview avenues, just before 2 a.m. Thursday.

Heavy black smoke was reportedly coming out of the chimney and it took firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control.

No one was injured.

Damage is estimated at about $150,000 and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
