P.E.I.'s Josh Currie called up to the Edmonton Oilers

Charlottetown native Josh Currie has been called up to play for the Edmonton Oilers.

The 26-year-old forward has been brought up from the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors in California.

Currie will be the second Islander called up to the NHL this month after Zack MacEwen — who was called up by the Vancouver Canucks earlier in February.

Currie flew yesterday from Los Angeles to Edmonton, said his father, Stephen Currie, who added Josh is 99 per cent sure he'll be playing in Tuesday night's game against Arizona.

"He's just going game by game. He could be up there for one game. He could be up there for three or four games," Currie said.

"As long as he keeps playing good, hopefully they'll keep him."

Currie leads the Condors this season with 24 goals and also serves as an alternate captain for the team.

He has reached 20 or more goals in each of the last three seasons and is the team's all-time leader in games played with 237 games under his belt.

Currie has 67 assists and 143 points over the course of five seasons with the Condors.

He signed his first NHL contract with Edmonton in July 2018.

'Just so determined'

His father said Josh's promotion to the NHL is "pretty surreal" and that he never thought it would happen.

"Not in my wildest dreams. He was always a good player but I thought maybe if he gets some university out of it, it'd be great. But he was just so determined," Currie said. "We're all pretty proud."

The Currie family is flying Tuesday to Edmonton to watch Josh's first NHL game.

"I couldn't miss it for the world. It may never happen again," Stephen Currie said.
