Pope Francis was almost chauffeured by an Islander

A former P.E.I. resident was scheduled to drive the Pope Francis in New York this week, but his chance fell through when the pontiff decided to walk.

Bruce McLellan works as a chauffeur for the United Nations, and had been assigned to drive Pope Francis a short distance in a golf cart if needed, but Francis declined the offer.

McLellan is still hoping to catch a glimpse of the Pope. As a UN staff member he was previously able to get tickets to see Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul II address the general assembly, but his name wasn't drawn this time.

He is planning on getting to work early and secure a spot for a glimpse as Francis enters the building.

"There's going to be a special entry in the lobby, but there's limited seats there," said McLellan.

McLellan said there are often chances to see famous people at the UN, but being in the right place at the right time can be tricky.

"You don't want to get too much attention on yourself, but sometimes it's fun," he said.

Francis spoke to the UN General Assembly Friday morning.
