P.E.I. school seeks clothing donations for students

Stonepark Intermediate school in Charlottetown doesn't want any of its students to be cold this winter — it's put out a call seeking more clothing donations for students.

The school has issued a plea for donations in the latest school newsletter and is hoping students and their families will have a look through their closets for clothing they can spare.

"I'd say we're up a bit in terms of our demand," said Stonepark principal Norman Beck.

"Right now, we're kind of in a size pickle, where we have particular needs that we have to fill on the body sizes we're looking for in the hoodies, the gym clothing, the sneakers that sort of thing — bigger sneakers."

Stonepark has had a clothing donation program for the past few years. Officials try to ensure students in need connect with school staff to find what they're looking for.

Beck thinks having the clothing available right at the school is important.

"It makes it much easier in terms of access, privacy, in terms of working with someone they know, having that ability to connect with them, do that shopping in here."

Charlottetown's Colonel Gray High School runs a similar program which is also seeing demand grow for clothing in the past couple of years, especially during the winter months.

"You'd hate to have a student staying home because it's just so cold outside and too cold to walk to school," said Colonel Gray guidance counsellor Gordie Cox.

"If we can help outfit them, hopefully that will help them get here during the cold days of winter."

After a successful donation drive back in the fall Colonel Gray still has a supply on hand.
