P.E.I. students reminded to vote before leaving for school

Elections Canada wants to remind students leaving P.E.I. to attend university or college that they can vote in the federal election before they go.

The returning officer in the electoral district of Malpeque, Ernie Stavert, said students can go into the returning office in their electoral district and cast their vote by special ballot.

Students must have proper identification to vote, such as a driver's license.

"I guess it's the simplest way for them to vote because when they get to university they still have the opportunity to vote but sometimes if they are living off campus identification can be a little more difficult because they have to have a civic address," said Stavert.

"It is still possible to do but the most convenient time for them to vote is before they leave home."

Returning offices are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until after Labour Day.

On Sept. 8, the hours at the returning office change to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Election day is Oct. 19.
