Paintball tournament brings best players to P.E.I.

Paintball is coming out of the woods and into the stadium on P.E.I. this weekend for the Eastern Player Paintball Championship.

Hundreds of players will be in York at Spikes Paintball for the third stop in the championship series. Some of those players are honing their skills for a shot at the big time.

"The pro players, it's their job to play and that's all they do. All they do is practice, train, eat," said tournament player Kody MacDonald.

"I think it would really surprise a lot of people the practice that we put in."

A new field for every tournament

While paintball is often associated with play in the woods, tournaments are played in stadiums, with bleachers for spectators.

This weekend's tournament will be played on a field that is unique. Inflatable bunkers are laid out on the field in a different pattern for each event.

Teams are given the plans in advance, and developing strategy is a key part of success.

"You need to learn those angles, you need to get that field down to a science before you play," said MacDonald.

Players from all across Atlantic Canada and Quebec are coming for the tournament. Rookies will play in a three-man team format on Saturday, with more experienced players playing on five-man teams Sunday.
