Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made an appearance on ABC’s TIME100 special, encouraging viewers to vote in the upcoming November election. And the palace has been quick to label Harry’s comments as “personal.”

In a statement to The Times (via People), Buckingham Palace said it “would not comment” on Harry taking part in the special but then added, “The duke is not a working member of the royal family and any comments he makes are made in a personal capacity.”

As a reminder, Harry can’t vote in the upcoming election due to not being a U.S. citizen, and he’s also unable to vote in the UK due to being a member of the royal family. He said as much during the TIME100 special, explaining that he’s “not going to be able to vote here in the U.S.” and he has not “been able to vote in the UK my entire life.” He then added, “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity.”

Yes to literally all of that, but apparently, some people think Harry crossed a line by seemingly encouraging people to vote at all since the royals are strictly prohibited from expressing political views. Which…uh…fine, sure, but a couple of things: (1) Harry is no longer a working member of the royal family (as the palace itself noted!), and (2) not sure encouraging people to reject negativity and hate speech is a “political view” as much as it is an appeal for human decency!
