Palmetto man killed in car accident at Manatee County intersection, troopers say
A 73-year-old bicyclist from Palmetto was killed Friday morning after being hit by a car at a Manatee County intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the crash happened around 9:17 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 19 and 61st Street East in Palmetto.
According to investigators, the cyclist was stopped at a stop sign on 61st Street East before entering the intersection when, at the same time, a sedan driven by a 26-year-old Tampa man was traveling north on U.S. 19 in the left lane. The sedan struck the cyclist, who was riding through the intersection, FHP says.
The bicyclist, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed he was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The driver of the sedan sustained minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
