‘Parasite’ Crosses $30 Million, Becomes NEON’s Top Box Office Grosser

“Parasite” has now become the highest grossing release ever for U.S. distributor NEON, grossing $2 million in its 16th weekend in release to bring its total to $30.9 million.

Founded in 2017 by Tom Quinn and Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League, NEON’s first claim to fame was the Tonya Harding biopic “I, Tonya,” which won Allison Janney a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and stood as NEON’s highest grosser with $30.2 million grossed. In passing that record, “Parasite” is the first non-English film imported from outside the U.S. to make $30 million domestically since “Pan’s Labyrinth” grossed $37.6 million in 2006.

Meanwhile, fellow Best Picture Oscar contender “Jojo Rabbit” added $1.4 million from 1,160 screens this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $25.9 million and its global total to $54.9 million. It’s a big jump for director Taika Waititi since his 2016 breakout film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” which grossed $5.2 million domestic and $22.8 million globally. Next weekend, “Jojo Rabbit” will be screened on 25 premium Dolby screens at AMC locations as part of the theater chain’s Oscar promotions.

Aside from the two Oscar contenders, the indie box office remained pretty flat as the arthouse world focuses on Sundance. Roadside Attractions’ “The Last Full Measure” grossed just over $1 million from 614 screens for a per screen average of $1,678.

“The Last Full Measure” tells the true story of William H. Pitsenbarger, a Vietnam War soldier who sacrificed his life to save over 60 men in one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Directed by Todd Robinson, the film stars Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Irvine and Peter Fonda in his final film role. It has a 61% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Also releasing this weekend is RLJE’s horror film “Color Out of Space,” the first feature film from director Richard Stanley since being infamously fired from the 1996 New Line production of “The Island of Dr. Moreau.” The film grossed approximately $242,000 from 65 screens for a per screen average of $2,842.

Based on H.P. Lovecraft’s 1927 horror novel, “Color Out Of Space” stars Nicolas Cage as a farmer whose Massachusetts home is nearly hit by a meteor. But he and his family soon discover they are far from avoiding disaster as a strange force from the meteor begins mutating the family’s crops, their livestock…and their own bodies. The film has a 84% RT score.
