Ronald Jean-Baptiste, 54, and Yanique Pierre, 46, who were visiting Lakeland from Massachusetts, were attempting to cross the street with their 7-year-old child near their hotel on Wednesday, Aug. 7, when they were hit by a Toyota Yaris that was headed southbound on South Florida Avenue, according to a news release from city officials.

Preliminary evidence and statements from witnesses indicate that the driver “had a green light while traveling through the intersection of Imperial Boulevard” at the time of the crash, according to city officials.
The 22-year-old driver, who was not injured, remained at the scene after the crash, which remains under investigation. Officials said the driver “did not exhibit obvious indications of impairment at the scene.”
Lakeland Police Officer Stephanie Kerr said crosswalks in the area where the crash occurred “are very marked and pronounced,” and that the area is “well-lit,” according to NBC affiliate WFLA-TV.
“It’s a business area so even though it’s late at night, there still can be pedestrians walking around,” she explained.
So far, no charges have been filed.
