After major snowstorm slams B.C., next two rounds already en route

Some of Canada's balmiest winters are on Vancouver Island, but you wouldn't have known it Saturday, as a strong winter storm blanketed that part of B.C. with snow. There'll be little time to dig out, as another pair of systems are already on their way to bring still more flakes for the rest of the weekend into Monday. For a closer look at timing and amounts, see below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • After an overnight break, the next round of snow begins Sunday morning, lasting through much of the day

  • A second system will arrive Sunday night, continuing overnight into Monday

  • Forecasters watching another potential system late next week

SUNDAY INTO MONDAY: TWO MORE ROUNDS IN QUICK SUCCESSION

Temperatures will abate somewhat on Sunday, but that will be a double-edged sword for the Lower Mainland, as two new low-pressure systems approach.

After a break Saturday night, Sunday morning features the first of the two systems moving in, gradually spreading to cover much of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Packed as it is with Pacific moisture, people across the region should expect another round of snow, though forecasters are still working out how much exactly.

Saturday saw limited amounts of snow on the Lower Mainland due to the very dry Arctic air blanketing it, but with some abatement on Sunday, it's more receptive to the moisture of the incoming system, meaning totals there will likely be higher – and still cold enough for snow at the coasts, or very near them.

Right on that low's heels, the next one will be arriving and merging with it Sunday night, with another shot of moisture heading into Monday. Between these two shots, another 15-20 cm is possible for parts of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, with 5-15 cm for most other communities, though this time, the west coast of the island will get off relatively lightly.

Beyond, another system is expected around Thursday. Temperatures by then will be milder, but still low enough to allow for some potential rain/snow mixing for some areas near the coast, and all-snow for ski areas.
