New party, new candidate: Bill Capes running in Essex for the People's Party of Canada
The People's Party of Canada (PPC) is hoping for a federal victory in Essex — currently an NDP riding — with candidate Bill Capes.
It's his first step into the business of politics, but Capes says that's exactly why he's a great candidate.
"I didn't really want to step into politics but I see the need for it," Capes said.
Born in Windsor, he has been a resident of Essex County his whole life and works in the skilled trades as a machine leader.
He said part of what motivated him to run was his disappointment with the current state of politics.
The PPC is the party formed by Quebec MP Maxime Bernier after he broke away from the Conservative Party last year.
The Quebec MP promised the goal of the People's Party of Canada (PPC) would be to shrink government, end Canada's supply management system and cut immigration numbers, among other things.
"I believe in their platform," Capes said.
"I believe in what they're trying to encourage as far as change goes. Our country has a desperate need to be put back on a solid footing hold financially, perhaps even spiritually if that's even possible to do on a political level. People are losing touch with who we are and what we always have been."
While some of Bernier's policies have received criticism, Capes said he's a strong and experienced leader.
"The Conservative party has gone left of centre and we've filled that void that they've vacated. We are now the new Conservative Party of Canada in that way."
He added that his party is "inclusive with all peoples of all religions and types."
Former Kingsville Councillor Chris Lewis is the Conservative Party of Canada's candidate for Essex.
"I wish the other candidates all the best," Lewis said in a statement.
"I am focused on our positive Conservative message for the people of Essex. I have been hearing at the doors that people continue to struggle to make ends meet under the Trudeau Liberals. I am working hard to elect a Conservative government that will help Canadians get ahead, not just get by."
Right now, NDP MP Tracey Ramsey holds the federal seat in Essex.
In a statement, responding to CBC's request for comment on the PPC putting forth a candidate for Essex, Ramsey said, "I am excited for the election and looking forward to connecting with people in the riding about issues that matter to them."
The Liberal Party and the Green Party have yet to announce candidates for Essex, Ontario.
