Backseat passenger killed in crash while 3 others walk away with minor injuries

A backseat passenger died in a single-vehicle crash on 16th Avenue in northeast Calgary early Tuesday morning that police think was caused by impaired driving.

Police say three others occupants, including the driver, walked away with minor injuries, while a 32-year-old passenger was killed.

The BMW sedan driven by a 32-year-old man was heading east on Renfrew Drive N.E. just before 1 a.m. when it crashed through a fence and ended up on 16th Avenue N.E., which runs parallel.

Investigators believe speed, alcohol and drugs were involved.
