Passengers evacuated after smoke spotted coming from C-Train

A half dozen C-Train riders were evacuated from a rail car early Wednesday morning after smoke was spotted coming from an onboard heating unit.

The Calgary fire department responded to a report of smoke on an LRT train at Centre Street and 7th Avenue S. about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

When fire crews arrived on the scene, they found the overhead pantograph down, disconnecting the car from its power source, the department said in a news release.

Passengers were evacuated as fire crews checked for hot spots and isolated the smoke source to a malfunctioning heating unit, the department added.

The driver and all six passengers were checked by EMS and released. There were no injuries, the news release said.

No estimate of damage was available.

The damaged rail car was relocated to a C-Train maintenance facility.
