A first-look image from Peaky Blinders' final season has fuelled speculation that Tommy Shelby may find himself crossing paths with Adolf Hitler.

The BBC drama has been filming its delayed sixth series, billed as its last instalment, and a promotional picture shared on social media has hinted that its main character will be spending time in Nazi Germany.

Cillian Murphy is shown in character as Tommy Shelby in a moody shot of a red-lit room, captioned: "On a gathering storm comes a tall handsome man in a dusty black coat with a red right hand.

"Tommy goes to Berghain..!"

The photo was shared by director Anthony Byrne on Instagram, as well as by the official Peaky Blinders Twitter account.

Although the Instagram post was location tagged with "a secret location", Berghain is a Berlin nightclub – suggesting Tommy will travel to Germany in the forthcoming series.

Fans of the hit show already know that Sam Claflin will continue to feature in series six as British fascist Oswald Mosley, offering further clues as to the direction the storyline could be going in.

Mosley had close ties with Hitler, even inviting the Nazi leader to his wedding to Diana Mitford, which was held at Joseph Goebbels' home.

Season five saw the Shelbys' assassination attempt on Mosley fail, so could it be that Tommy is set to follow his enemy to Germany?

Filming has been delayed on the final season of Peaky Blinders because of the coronavirus pandemic, after the last series aired in 2019.

But in January it was confirmed that season six was finally underway, and fans are eagerly awaiting an air date.

Creator and writer Steven Knight said: “Peaky is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the COVID pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher.

"We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”
