Pedestrian critical after serious east-end crash

A pedestrian is in hospital with critical injuries after he was struck while standing on the sidewalk by a car that had collided with another vehicle. The crash happened at around 12:30 a.m. Friday at Lawrence Avenue East and Railside Road, just east of the Don Valley Parkway.

Two vehicles collided, sending one onto the northwest corner of the intersection, where it took out a pole and a bus shelter before hitting a pedestrian. The pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to Toronto paramedics, several other people were taken to hospital, possibly as many as four, with injuries that are believed to be less serious.

The crash left debris strewn across a wide area of the intersection.

The collision has caused the following closures and diversions while police investigate. Expect the following closures to stay in effect until at least 9 a.m. ET.

- Lawrence Avenue East is closed from Victoria Park to Railside Road.

- The TTC is diverting the following buses: 91B, 91C Woodbine and 54 Lawrence Avenue East.
