Driver, vehicle located after man fatally struck while sleeping on ground downtown, Toronto police say
Toronto police say they have located a driver of a vehicle that mounted a curb and killed a man sleeping on the ground early Tuesday.
The incident happened around 6:40 a.m. at the intersection of Scott Street and Wellington Street East, not far from Toronto's St. Lawrence Market.
According to police, SUV dragged the man before the driver fled the scene. Police say they have now located both the driver and the vehicle with help from the public.
Earlier in the day, Insp. Jeff Bangild said the man was "laying on the ground" at the time of the collision.
The driver was northbound on Scott Street when they drove up onto the sidewalk, Bangild said, where the victim was sleeping at the southeast corner of the intersection with Wellington, which is one-way in that stretch.
The 57-year-old man was "dragged a short distance and left there as the driver fled," Bangild told reporters during a news conference.
Paramedics initially rushed the man to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but he died a short time later. Investigators were still working to identify him when Bangild spoke to media.
No charges have been laid but police said its traffic services unit is continuing to investigate.
The intersection was closed throughout the morning for the police investigation but reopened around noon.
The hit and run was the second fatal collision between a driver and pedestrian in Toronto just this week. On Monday, a 53-year-old man died in hospital after he was struck by a dump truck in the city's west end.
