A 62-year-old man was fatally struck by a driver in North York Monday evening, Toronto police say.

In a news release Tuesday afternoon, police say the pedestrian was seen around 8:30 p.m. walking on the east sidewalk of Jane Street, north of Wilson Avenue, before he was struck by a car travelling southbound.

Police told CBC Toronto the driver, a 57-year-old woman who stayed at the scene after the collision, reported seeing the pedestrian cross the road mid-block. Police say they could not confirm if the victim jaywalked or used a designated crosswalk.

He was initially taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but police say he died there four hours later.

His identity has not been released.

Police noted north and southbound lanes in the area were reduced to one lane in each direction for construction, and said the driver stayed at the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam video of the collision to contact their traffic services division.
