Woman killed while walking on Highway 22 west of Calgary

A woman has been killed by a pickup truck on Highway 22 while she was trying to get help after her minivan broke down — and her passenger was rushed to hospital with medical concerns unrelated to the incident, police say.

The 53-year-old woman from Morley was "killed instantly" as she was struck while walking on the highway, RCMP Cpl. Sharon Franks said.

She was attempting to flag down the driver of the pickup for help, RCMP said, when she was hit by the pickup's side mirror, and then the utility trailer it was hauling.

The collision occurred at about 10:15 p.m. MT, Thursday near the intersection of Highway 22 and Highway 8.

A passenger in his early 40s, who remained inside the minivan at the side of the road, was transported to hospital with medical concerns unrelated to the incident, EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux said in a statement.

The driver of the pickup and his passenger were not injured, Cochrane RCMP said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. No charges have been laid, but RCMP continue to investigate.

Police have not released the victim's name to the public.
