A pedestrian died after being hit while crossing the road near Socastee Elementary School, said Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol in a news release.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee was driving north on S.C. 707 when it hit Hector Daniel Perez Ortiz, 37, trying to cross the highway near Fairyland Drive around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. He died on the scene, according to Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard in an email.
