Peel police cruiser damaged in 5-vehicle crash in Brampton, 1 injured

A Peel Regional police cruiser was damaged in a five-vehicle crash on Saturday night in a Brampton intersection.

Const. Mark Fischer, spokespman for Peel police, said one person was left with minor injuries in the crash at Steeles Avenue and Hurontario Street at about 10:10 p.m. and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Toronto paramedics said the person was a male patient. No age was disclosed.

Fischer said the police cruiser was northbound on Hurontario Street when it was involved in a collision with an SUV westbound on Steeles Avenue.

Police did not say which vehicle was responsible for the crash.

That collision forced the SUV to strike a pick-up truck, he said. That truck then smashed into a minivan, which in turn hit a car. The person who was injured was in the SUV.

"It's still under investigation," Fischer said early Sunday.

No charges have been laid. Peel Regional Police's major collision bureau is conducting the investigation.

Fischer said the police cruiser, which was a regular patrol car, was not involved in a pursuit at the time.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit was notified about the crash, but has not invoked its mandate, which means it is not investigating the collision.

The SIU investigates incidents of death, serious injury or sexual assault involving police in Ontario.

Mike Merko, superintendent for Peel Regional Paramedic Services, said only one ambulance and one other superintendent attended the scene.

The collision closed the intersection for hours as officers investigated and crews cleaned glass and metal strewn across the road, but it has since reopened to traffic.
