Peel police have identified a man fatally shot in Brampton early Tuesday.

Amanjot Bains, 36, died in hospital after he was shot in a plaza near Dixie Road and Peter Robertson Boulevard, police said. Officers had been called to the scene shortly before 1 a.m.

Peel paramedics found Bains in life-threatening condition suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was taken to a trauma centre, where he died.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"Based on the investigation, police are aware that several potential witnesses were in the area at the time of the shooting, but have not yet had the opportunity to speak with investigators," police said in a news release on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, police said a suspect fled the area in a red vehicle.

Peel's homicide and missing persons bureaus are continuing to investigate.
