PEI newcomers association launches girl empowerment video

A new three-minute video created to inspire and empower girls to talk about their culture and families was launched Sunday by the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada.

The video was posted to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube on the Girls Action Foundation's National Day of Action, which takes place every Valentine's Day.

The Association used a grant of $700 it received from the Foundation to create the video.

The video was filmed and produced by a high school student who is also a newcomer. It features mothers and daughters from China, Syria and Kenya talking about life lessons.

The Association's Brianne Peters helped create the video.

"It's really heartfelt, you know it shows that no matter where we are in the world, all generations, and all mothers and daughters, they all have a certain amount of respect for each other, and love each other and want the best for each other," she said.

"You know it's a really touching video. It's not too often that mothers and daughters get a chance to really speak their feelings to each other. It was a really fun project to make."

It is the third year the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada applied for and received the grant from the Girls Action Foundation.

The grant was used to cover transportation costs, food, sound and video equipment rental, and the honorarium for the high school student who filmed and produced the video.
