People who post gym selfies all the time are revealing something a little bit more personal than a few square inches of toned flesh, a study found.

Gym selfies are a part of Facebook most of us have grown to accept – but people who post them could be rather damaged individuals.

A Brunel University study found that people who post a lot of selfies are more likely to be narcissistic – a personality trait where people ‘need’ attention.

It’s not – to put it mildly – a positive trait, being considered as part of the ‘dark triad’ of personality traits along with Machiavellianism and psychopathy.

The researchers wrote, ‘Narcissists also wrote more status updates about their diet and exercise routine, suggesting that they use Facebook to broadcast the effort they put into their physical appearance.’

Other posts can also reveal some rather dark truths – people who posted frequently about their romantic partner often had low self-esteem, according to the Brunel University researchers, who surveyed 555 Facebook users.
