Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada has faced significant criticism throughout the campaign, particularly for its views on immigration in Canada. The party has also set promises for climate change that significantly differ from the competitors.

Here are some highlights from the People’s Party of Canada platform:

Taxes

  • Eliminate targeted tax measures

  • Cut personal income taxes after the deficit has been eliminated

  • Raise the basic personal exemption to $15,000 (from $12,069 in 2019) and reduce the number of tax brackets from five to two with incomes from $15,001 to $100,000 taxed at 15 per cent and income over $100,000 taxed at 25 per cent

  • Gradually abolish the personal capital gains tax by decreasing the inclusion rate from the current 50 per cent down to 0

Health

  • Replace the Canada Health Transfer cash payments with a permanent transfer of tax points of equivalent value to the provinces and territories

  • Provincial and territorial governments will be fully responsible for health care funding and management

Climate Change and Environment

  • Repeal Bill C-69 and Bill C-48

  • Find a private buyer for Trans Mountain

  • Withdraw from the Paris Accord and abandon greenhouse gas emission reduction targets

  • Put an end to the carbon tax and leave it to provincial governments to adopt programs to reduce emissions if they want to

  • Eliminate subsidies for green technology

Immigration and Refugees

  • Accept fewer resettled refugees

  • Declare the whole border an official port of entry for the purposes of refugee claims to send anyone trying to enter Canada illegally back to the U.S.

  • Fence off the areas where illegal border jumping is prevalent

  • Rely on private sponsorships instead of having the government pay for all the costs of resettling refugees in Canada

  • Give priority to refugees belonging to persecuted groups

  • Take Canada out of the UN’s Global Compact for Migration

  • Lower the total number of immigrants and refugees Canada accept every year from 300,000 to between 100,000 and 150,000

  • Accept fewer resettled refugees and limit the number of immigrants accepted under the family reunification program including abolishing the program for parents and grand-parents

  • Change the law to make birth tourism illegal
