SC man arrested after exchanging gunfire with police in hours-long standoff. Two were shot

A Surfside Beach man barricaded himself in a housing unit after shooting two people Thursday evening.

Horry County Police, along with other law enforcement, responded to the shooting about 9 p.m. on South Reindeer Road near Surfside Beach, according to a Facebook post.

Police warned residents to stay inside their home during the incident.

When officers arrived at the active shooting, they encountered Neil Wade Brown, 60, who was armed, according to a press release from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. There was an exchange of gunfire between Brown and responding officers.

Brown and the officers were not injured, and Brown was taken into custody about 11:10 p.m. Charges for the man were not immediately known.

SLED was requested to investigate by the Horry County Police Department.

Residents posted on social media that they could hear gunfire exchange between officers and the barricaded person in the housing unit. Others posted that they were evacuated from their home while officers worked to remove the shooter.

Surfside Beach Mayor Robert Krouse wrote in his weekly newsletter Friday that Surfside Beach Police officers were able to assist in the evacuation of neighboring houses and getting shooting victims to an ambulance.

It is unclear what occurred to prompt the shooting. The conditions of the two people who received gunshot wounds are unknown.

Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov said by text that she could not comment on the investigation.

HCPD Special Operations teams, including SWAT, negotiations and drone team members, worked for about two hours to safely resolve the incident.

The incident in Horry County was the 32nd officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2024, according to the press release. This is the first officer involved shooting for the Horry County Police Department this year.
