Person Killed After Falling Into Running Plane Engine, Investigation Underway

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines planeA person is dead after falling into the jets of a running engine at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, officials have announced.
The incident happened on Wednesday, May 29, as a Cityhopper plane for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Flight 1341, an Embraer ERJ-190 jet, was preparing to fly to Billund, Denmark. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

“Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this. The Royal Military Police is currently conducting an investigation,” Schiphol Airport said in a translated statement via X (formerly known as Twitter).
A spokesperson for the Dutch military police, Marechaussee, told Reuters that it is too early into the investigation to say whether the person’s death was an accident or a form of suicide.
It is also not immediately known whether the individual was a passenger or an airport employee.
Per the BBC and CBS News, the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) showed a photo of the KLM airplane surrounded by fire trucks and ambulances on the scene next to the departure terminals.

The entrance of Amsterdam Airport SchipholThe Royal Military Police published a statement on X, writing, "A person fell into a running aircraft engine and died" and that "all passengers and employees of the flight in question have been disembarked and are being taken care of."
"Terrible news about a fatal accident today at Schiphol," Denmark's Infrastructure Minister Mark Harbers wrote on X.
Schiphol is said to be one of Europe’s busiest hub airports, with nearly 5.5 million passengers using the airport just last month.
The airport recently made headlines after Nicki Minaj was arrested “at Schiphol on suspicion of exporting soft drugs,” the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, May 25. She was on her way to Manchester, England, for the next show of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour when the incident occurred.

Several other plane engine-related deaths have made headlines in the U.S. in recent years — including a mother of three named Courtney Edwards who was ingested by an engine while working at Alabama's Montgomery Regional Airport on Dec. 31, 2023.
Earlier that year, 27-year-old David Renner died similarly at Texas’ San Antonio International Airport. However, a medical examiner ruled his death as a suicide.
