Perth Zoo's Orangutan Mother Climbs Out of Enclosure to Find Missing Son

An orangutan mother climbed out of her enclosure at Perth Zoo on May 28 in an apparent effort to save her son, who had reportedly fallen from some equipment and into a garden bed.

The incident prompted an evacuation to the nocturnal house. The orangutan, Sekara, successfully retrieved her five-year-old son, Sungai, and returned to her exhibit after about 15 minutes, according to the zoo.

“Sekara is an excellent mum and a bit of a helicopter parent, and the only way to get to him was to pop on to the visitor board. She retrieved him and returned to the enclosure on her own,” a zoo spokeswoman told WA Today. Credit: Jess McConnell and Matt Smith via Storyful
