Peter Dinklage on why fans hated the 'Game of Thrones' series finale
Peter Dinklage has his own theory on why fans reacted with such anger over the series finale of Game of Thrones.
Though the series had waned some since it overtook George R.R. Martin's books, there were still moments of brilliance in the latter series, thanks in no small measure to turns like Dinklage's as the inimitable Tyrion Lannister.
But the final season - with its rushed storytelling and divisive conclusion - for many remains hard to forgive.
Speaking about it to The New Yorker, Dinklage has likened it to a break up, adding that there were 'signposts all along the way' to prep fans for plot revelations.
“Well, everybody’s always going to have an opinion, and that means an ownership. It’s like breaking up with somebody. They get upset,” he said.
“I can’t speak for everybody, but my feeling is they didn’t want it to end, so a lot of people got angry. This happens. Monsters are created. And you don’t see it coming. We vote them into office. You look the other way.
“So for everybody to get upset because they loved a character so much and they had so much faith in that person—there were signposts all along the way for that character.”
Though a petition was soon launched to have the final series remade with 'competent writers', Dinklage says that he still believes the work done by showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff on the last episode of the long-running series was 'extraordinary'.
HBO is currently working up a prequel series, House of the Dragon, which will explore the history of House Targaryen.
It follows the pilot of British writer Jane Goldman, which was based on Martin's 'Age of Heroes' era from the Thrones universe, not being taken to series.
