Philadelphia Eagles at Kansas City Chiefs: National predictions for Super Bowl LVII
The last game of the 2022-2023 NFL season is upon us.
Super Bowl LVII will feature the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs are the number one seed in the AFC and beat the Cincinnati Bengals to win the AFC Championship game.
The Eagles are the one seed in NFC and trounced the San Francisco 49ers to win the NFC Championship game.
This matchup will feature both quarterbacks on the Associated Press NFL All-Pro Teams. Patrick Mahomes was the first-team QB and presumptive NFL MVP. QB Jalen Hurts earned second-team honors and will likely finish second in MVP voting.
This will be the first Super Bowl between two No. 1 seeds since 2018 when the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles played in Super Bowl LII.
Experts predict the Eagles, much like in Super Bowl LII, will be victorious.

Both teams will be hard-pressed to force turnovers and can’t hope that the opponent beats itself with key mistakes or breakdowns. Should just the Eagles and Chiefs just line up in a physical, well-coached disciplined game with its share of big-play flashes, the Eagles are the stronger team with fewer weaknesses. Hurts, much like Nick Foles in Super Bowl 52 for the Eagles, plays well with a lot of help while Mahomes falls a little short carrying his Chiefs one more time.

While both offenses have dangerous weapons, the difference in the Super Bowl could come from the disparity in quality of their defenses. The Eagles secondary has given up just 192 passing yards in the playoffs and their defensive line bottled up star RBs in the Giants Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey of the 49ers. Chris Jones has impressed for the Chiefs defense, but that unit also suffered a significant injury against the Bengals. Key defensive back L’Jarius Sneed is in the concussion protocol, and KC will be desperate to get him back for the big game.

Why are we taking the Eagles as the favorites with the Super Bowl 2023 point spread? Firstly, defense wins championships. It’s an oldie but a goodie for a reason. Teams with elite defenses are great at shutting down elite offenses regardless of the situation. The Eagles have had one of the best defenses all year against the pass and rush, and in the postseason, the defensive line has been even better.

Mahomes will be limited when it comes to being able to scramble, which means the Eagles defense will zero in on him all night The Texas Tech alum was built for that kind of pressure, though, so look for him to still pull off some miracle throws to Travis Kelce and the receiver corps. That won’t be enough to stop Philadelphia. Hurts has this team running like a well-oiled machine, and from the looks of it, this is just this team’s year to go all the way.

But mostly, it’s because of Mahomes and a collection of receivers — led by the all-world Kelce — who will force Philly’s secondary to adjust. And re-adjust. And keep re-adjusting, because there’s nothing predictable about Mahomes or this passing attack . . . except that it’s so dang hard to stop.

Eagles. Reddick has emerged as a pass rushing sensation, capable of setting the tone early and closing it out late. He’s Justin Verlander and Mariano Rivera combined. Eagles. The Chiefs lack their normal abundance of offensive playmakers, Mahomes and Kelce probably won’t be 100%, and this Philadelphia team is dominant, especially when operating at full capacity.

It’s a virtual pick’em for a reason, and that line could shift toward the Chiefs before kickoff. The Eagles’ running game will be a huge factor, and Philadelphia will lead at halftime in this game. Still, this is another Mahomes legacy game, and the victory against the Bengals was just another example of how his dynamic play-making ability shifts games. Count on the lessons learned from the loss to Tampa Bay in Super Bowl LV to register, especially against that pass rush.

After absorbing 11 QB hits between his first two playoff games this year, Mahomes could be in for a slightly more frantic day here, and in that case, Philly feels a bit better suited to capitalize on a forced downfield shot, boasting handsy and opportunistic starters at corner and safety. Couple that with the Eagles’ more consistent ground game, plus Sirianni’s aggression compared to Reid’s penchant for occasional clock-management miscues, and we’ll give the Birds the slightest of early nods.

The Chiefs not only overcame those missing pieces to pull out the victory against Cincinnati and avenge a three-game losing skid to the Bengals but knocked off a team on a 10-game winning streak and one that was playing the best two-way football in the NFL over the past two months. And they did it with Mahomes visibly hampered by that ankle injury.
