Phillip Schofield says 'talking saved me' after he revealed he was gay

Phillip Schofield has opened up about announcing he was gay, saying “talking saved” him as he offered support to a grieving mother who’s son committed suicide.

Taking to Twitter, the This Morning stalwart shared the plight of Alison Watson who is raising funds to for a mental health charity after the tragic death of her son Morgan.

The distraught mum wrote the JustGiving page: "We are heartbroken at his loss and have started this fundraising page in the small hope that we can prevent others suffering as we are losing someone they love as we love Morgan so much.

"Our hearts are breaking. Talking to whoever is so important for everyone, especially young men."

Sharing the cause Schofield tweeted: “Another heartbreaking story. There is strength in talking. Please don’t try to fight your head on your own. Talking saved me.”

He ended the tweet with the hashtags #BeKind and #Talk.

The presenter revealed he was gay in back in February after being married to wife Steph for 27 years.

Talking to The Sun on Sunday, he said covering up his sexuality had taken him to “the darkest of places” but the support of his wife and their two grown up daughters, Molly and Ruby, kept him going.

He said: "There is no doubt living with this kind of secret can take people to the darkest of places. And there is no question for me it got very dark, because it felt hopeless.

"There is no question, in those moments, when I couldn’t see a way forward, it was Steph and my girls - through their strength - who hauled me back.

"But I understand completely why so many men and women in this country get to the point of suicide.”
