Phone scammers are posing as Amber Alert representatives, CHP warns. What to watch out for

Phone scammers are posing as Amber Alert representatives to register children to the abduction emergency system, the California Highway Patrol warned Sunday.

The Templeton division of the agency said scammers have asked for personal information and offered to meet at peoples’ homes to sign their children up for the alerts.

“They ask for confidential info and to meet at your home,” the agency posted on Facebook. “This is not how the Amber Alert system works!”

In the post, CHP said they are the only agency allowed to issue Amber Alerts and that no registration is needed.

The agency advised to never give out personal information or answer phone calls from “possible scam” numbers.

If contacted by a scammer, CHP recommended to report it to a local law enforcement agency like the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office at 805-781-4540.
