British Columbia is in the midst of a potent winter storm, which has brought heavy snowfall and damaging winds across the South Coast this week. The good news is it is expected to gradually die down through Thursday.
But before it winds down, there are widespread power outages, school closures and transit delays to deal with. On top of that, more rounds of snow will linger into Friday morning, with yet another system that threatens more low-elevations snow for the beginning of this weekend.
The current storm forced widespread school closures and made travel next to impossible, while strong winds cancelled some ferry crossings. Thursday will have some lingering impacts and additional closures, as well.
According to BC Hydro, more than 16,000 customers remained without power in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island early Thursday, which is down from the 23,000 that were left in the dark at the peak of the storm on Wednesday.
Powerful wind gusts reaching 70-90 km/h lashed parts of the South Coast, while hurricane-force winds up to 130 km/h prompted rare blizzard warnings in the Howe Sound area.
The storm has prompted many to take to social media to post pictures and videos. Here are the latest.
