British Columbia's uncommonly brutal winter continued this week, with a moisture-laden system slamming into the latest dose of cold air gripping the province right down to its coasts.

That meant heavy snow down to sea level, but as temperatures rose through the day Thursday and overnight, the rain changed to freezing rain for parts of the Fraser Valley, leaving much of the region an ice-covered mess amid tens of thousands of power outages.

On top of all of this, Friday's strong winds are coinciding with the high waters of a king tide, raising storm surge threat along the shores of Howe Sound and the Straight Juan da Fuca.
