Piatto given green light to open in former Canadian Tire building

A popular pizzeria that has restaurants right across Atlantic Canada has been given approval to open a second location in St. John's.

Piatto Pizzeria, which is known for its wood-fire pizza and wine, is set to open at 60 Elizabeth Avenue, in the former Canadian Tire building.

At St. John's city council Monday evening, Coun. Art Puddister said there were no objections to the project.

Piatto already has one location on Duckworth Street in St. John's, as well as other restaurants in New Brunswick, P.E.I. and Nova Scotia.

Vacant

The Baine Johnston Corporation, which owns Leon's, purchased the former Canadian Tire building in July.

The corporation plans to close the current Leon's location on Kenmount Road and move to the new building, which has more retail space.

Canadian Tire moved out of the building almost a year ago once a new location opened on Hebron Way.

The building on Elizabeth Avenue has been vacant ever since.
