Picton Castle tall ship back home in Lunenburg
The tall ship Picton Castle is back in Lunenburg after a two year voyage sailing around the world.
A large crowd waited two extra hours through cold rain and hail on Saturday to see the ship after strong headwinds made the last leg of the journey extra long.
This is the Picton Castle's sixth voyage around the world.
Jan Samet O'Leary travelled from Maryland and waited on shore for her son who is part of the 32 person crew.
"He's posted on Facebook, but I wanted to be here to meet him," she said.
Kelley Oliver sailed on the Picton Castle from October to January from Bali to Cape Town.
"I'm excited to see her come in to Canada, I'm from Ottawa, and to see the friends I made while I was on board," she said.
"We went to New Zealand and Australia which we hadn't done before and we went to the Bay of Islands in New Zealand and I said 'it's like Mahone Bay and I can go to Mahone Bay anytime."
The ship's captain, Daniel Moreland, lives in Lunenburg and knows what he is looking forward to.
"I'm excited to be home and I'm looking forward to resting in my own bed," he said.
The Picton castle will spend a week tied up in Lunenburg. After that, the ship is off to the eastern United States to participate in Tall Ships festivals.
