Piece of SaskTel sign in Regina comes crashing down

A piece of the large SaskTel sign hanging over its office on Saskatchewan Drive crashed down Wednesday afternoon.

No one was injured.

Police said no traffic is currently being allowed on that section of Saskatchewan Drive, which is between Lorne Street and Hamilton Street.

A piece of the letter 'K' in SaskTel came down, but it has since been repaired.

There is no word yet on why the sign broke, but there have been heavy winds throughout the day in Regina. Environment Canada said to expect winds gusting up to 60 km/h in the evening.

A SaskTel spokesperson said the incident was reported by employees at 2:30 p.m. CST. As of 6:30 p.m., police said traffic was expected to reopen soon.

"People outside notified us immediately," Michelle Englot, a spokeswoman for SaskTel said.

She said SaskTel security and building staff worked with staff of the Cornwall Centre — which is connected to the SaskTel building — to secure the area.

"To make sure that there was nobody in the area in the event that something else came off," she said.

Englot said it wasn't immediately known how the piece of sign was dislodged.

"Obviously it was a very windy day but we have the sign folks who are having a look to see what caused it," she said. "The sign was installed about four years ago and we haven't had any previous problems."

Englot said the missing piece was fixed and "everything should be back to normal".
