Pirates manager Derek Shelton finds a card he'll never trade on 'Old Baseball Cards'
Derek Shelton’s path to becoming a big-league manager isn’t what we usually see. He never played in the big leagues. Only 46 games in the minors. Instead, the new Pittsburgh Pirates manager is a bit like the minor league underdog who finally made The Show.
He was a Yankees minor-league manager. A hitting coach for the Indians and Rays. He was the quality control coach for Blue Jays and the Twins’ bench coach. His dream finally came true last winter when Shelton, 49, was hired as the new Pirates manager. We get to see some of that journey on a new episode of “Old Baseball Cards,” Yahoo Sports’ baseball-card powered trip down memory lane.
The cards were on our side, as Shelton opens a pack of 1983 Topps and finds the one friend he says always told him he’d be a big-league manager. Shelton pulls a trio of ’80s Hall of Famers — hello, Nolan Ryan, Mike Schmidt and Alan Trammell — but it’s that one card that he deems untouchable.
We also find the Pirates unis of the early ’80s and Shelton agrees to bring them back before making a trade.
