Pizza takeaway restaurants in Derbyshire have been conning diners by using fake cheese and switching turkey for ham.

Trading standards officers found that a whopping two thirds of ham and cheese pizzas failed to contain either ham or cheese.

The dodgy diners could now face prosecution under the Food Safety Act for not labelling their products correctly.

Out of 15 eateries, a whopping eight used a mixture of cheese and the unappetising sounding cheese substitute - made from vegetable milk instead of fat.

And five takeouts substituted turkey ham for ham.

Derbyshire County Council also said its officers found high levels of salt in the pizzas.

Counsellor Dave Allen, cabinet member for health in the region, said that ‘fakeaway’ restaurants misleading their customers could be a health risk.

“It’s important we keep consumers safe from any misleading or false information when it comes to what is in their food,” he told The Derby Evening Telegraph.

"Mislabelling food and ingredients can be very dangerous - especially for people with allergies to certain products.”

Sadly, this latest news is not the first time some takeaway restaurants have hoodwinked consumers.

Last year, consumer watchdog Which? tested 60 lamb meals including curies and kebabs, finding 17 contained other types of meat and seven had no lamb at all.
