Pleasantview traffic barriers not so pleasant for residents

A change aimed at slowing traffic in the Pleasantview neighbourhood is creating chaos instead, according to one resident.

"There have been a few accidents here already ... and then there's been people turning and just missing each other and there's been constant honking all night long," said Jessica Sharpe.

In an effort to reduce the number of drivers using 106th Street as a shortcut, the city erected barricades at 56th Avenue over the weekend.

Drivers now have to turn east onto 56th Avenue. However the intersection is blind as oncoming vehicles are just coming over a hill.

Sharpe, who runs a day home near the corner, said some southbound motorists are still going through without realising the road is now one way.

"People are ignoring the signs completely and still going southbound even at 51st Avenue where it's closed. They're still coming through anyway," she said.

"They're using my drive way to turnaround, they're going down the back alley which is not ready for that much traffic. It's a bad alley and it's just the constant speed is insane.

New signs are being added to address complaints, said Coun. Michael Walters.

He said the changes are part of a pilot, but he says if it's not working the city might have to look at another plan.
