Smoke from fire at Delta recycling facility seen across Metro Vancouver
A structure fire in Delta, B.C. along the Fraser River sent plumes of black smoke into the sky Saturday night, which could be seen across Metro Vancouver.
Fire crews held back by blaze
Fire crews spent over two hours battling the blaze, which broke out at a recycling facility on Alaska Way around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
"There was multiple propane tanks venting and paint cans exploding ... the fire was very large when we got on scene," said Lieutenant Clayton Nickel, who was on scene at the fire Saturday.
"We kept our crews back and turned our water cannons on the fire from the trucks, just stayed back until it was knocked down a little bit."
BC Hydro said the fire caused a power outage in the area.
The owner of the facility was treated on scene for some smoke inhalation. A boat and a bus parked in front of the building were also destroyed.
Nickel said the fire was contained around 9:30 p.m., but a crew was on scene overnight monitoring the site.
Police said traffic in the area was affected and asked drivers not to stop on Highway 17 to take photos of the blaze.
Investigators will be at the scene Sunday morning to find out what started the fire.
