Polar bear rips 6 tents pitched in Iqaluit park

Some people camping in Iqaluit woke up to an unpleasant surprise Saturday morning — a polar bear had ripped their tents.

"So a tent right next to us is damaged by a polar bear," CBC reporter Jordan Konek wrote on Facebook. He and his girlfriend slept in one of at least seven tents pitched in Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near the Iqaluit airport.

"Thank God we weren't touched," he said.

A wildlife officer shot the bear around 5 a.m. Saturday morning, according to workers at the park.

At least six tents were ripped but no one was hurt. It's not clear if anyone encountered the bear while it was near the tents.
