Police arrest armed robbery suspect after tracking him to residential St. John's street

A heavy police presence on a residential St. John's street ended with the peaceful arrest of a 35-year-old man ultimately charged in connection with an unsuccessful armed robbery at a nearby gas station, according to police.

At about 5 a.m. on Wednesday, police got a call about an armed robbery at a gas station on Kenmount Road, according to a release sent by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. The man had fled the scene when RNC officers arrived. Gas station staff said he didn't get away with any money, but had a weapon and demanded cash.

Police identified the man and found him at a house on Wigmore Court, just off Thorburn Road.

At least six police cars police cars surrounded the house later Wednesday morning. Const. James Cadigan of the RNC said there was "communication" between police and the man, but could not say whether weapons were drawn.

That communication came to a peaceful resolution and the man was arrested without incident, Cadigan said.

Police are still investigating and the man was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, and breach of court orders.
