Police close Gander streets to search for reported gunman

Gander RCMP response prompted by teen playing Airsoft

Police in Gander closed roads and suited up in tactical gear Sunday evening after getting an emergency call about a man walking the streets with a gun, however as of Monday morning they still had not made any arrests.

A taxi driver called RCMP at 5:30 p.m. to report a man dressed in camouflage was walking along Edinburgh Drive with what appeared to be a long gun.

The caller said the man with the gun was walking towards the Roe Avenue shopping area, and had a gun resembling a rifle over his shoulder.

Several streets were briefly closed and officers from Gander and three other detachments searched the area.

The RCMP said about 10 officers were involved in the search, but did not find any sign of the armed man.

No one was arrested. Witnesses or people with more information are being asked to call their local police.

Comparisons to Moncton RCMP shooting

Sgt. David Ossinger said after last year's shooting of five officers in New Brunswick, the RCMP take these type of calls very seriously.

"We can't help but draw comparisons," he said.

"You may notice the members here at this scene are wearing a new type of body amour that you might not have noticed before - and carrying long guns ourselves," Ossinger told CBC News. "This is a strategy that's been implemented in light of the recommendations made following the Moncton shootings."
