Police now say bromazolam was involved in an overdose death outside of Moncton after initially warning the public about another drug.

It's the second report of a death this week related to bromazolam after the Fredericton Police Force reported an overdose involving the drug. Both of the deaths occurred in July.

The RCMP originally suspected the overdose to be the result of carfentanil – a drug several times stronger than fentanyl.

However, in an update, the force said autopsy results confirmed a mixture of fentanyl and bromazolam, a type of benzodiazepine commonly prescribed as a sedative for conditions like anxiety.

While overdoses involving carfentanil can be treated with naloxone, that's not the case with bromazolam.
