2 Edmonton police officers hurt in rollover crash downtown

Two Edmonton police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries early Monday when their marked vehicle rolled down an embankment and landed on McDougall Hill.

The crash investigation resulted in the closure of McDougall Hill Road and MacDonald Drive, creating delays for several hours during the morning commute.

The officers were on patrol around 3:15 a.m. when they observed a white two-door Nissan vehicle driving erratically, police said in a statement Monday afternoon.

The officers decided to follow the vehicle in the Jasper Avenue area and were behind it when the Nissan went westbound on MacDonald Drive, striking the south curb at a high rate of speed.

The officers followed the Nissan and drove off the road. Their cruiser rolled down the embankment and landed on McDougall Hill.

Investigators have determined that speed and road conditions were factors in the collision.

The suspect vehicle was not located, but police said they got a report of an impaired driver around 4 a.m. in the area of 102nd Avenue and 144th Street. The vehicle was a two-door white Nissan.

Police continue to investigate.
