Police ID man shot and killed on Fresno street. He was assaulted before shots fired

The Fresno Police Department on Monday identified a man shot and killed on a road Aug. 8.

Arnold Ortega, 37, was found on the road after he was shot in the area of Lane and Recreation avenues in southeast Fresno just before 4 p.m.

Officers arrived and found Ortega with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said detectives learned that Ortega was walking on Recreation when several men approached him and assaulted him. One of the suspects pulled out a gun and shot Ortega multiple times.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, and detectives continue to search the area for witnesses and surveillance footage.

It is the 18th homicide in Fresno in 2024. This time last year, there were 21.
