The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says it is investigating a double homicide in Richmond, B.C.

The team said in a social media post its investigation is still in the early stages but that it's working closely with Richmond RCMP to gather evidence.

Richmond RCMP confirmed Saturday afternoon it was investigation a shooting at Ackroyd Road and Minoru Boulevard.

In a written release, police said they were called to the scene around 11 a.m. after receiving a report that shots were fired, and that officers found two deceased victims with gunshot wounds.

Eric Gao, who lives in the building complex at the homicide scene, says he heard a loud bang that woke him up from  sleep. He says he thought it was a neighbour slamming a door loudly, then noticed police cars surrounding the area.

Gina Zhong also lives nearby and says she went outside when she heard the sirens. She called the neighbourhood "peaceful and quiet," and said she was surprised to learn what had happened.

"It's really shocking," she said.

Police said the situation is under control and that there is no immediate danger to the public in the area.

They said the area will be closed to traffic for the foreseeable future.
